Serial numbers on nibs

Sheaffer and Parker stamped multidigit codes on some of their Lifetime and Duofold nibs during the early '30s. As far as is known, the keys to these codes are lost and their purpose remains unclear. The presence of a presumably unique serial number, however, must have indirectly emphasized the heavily-hyped lifetime guarantees that these pens bore.
