Eversharp pencils and Wahl metal pens came in a wide variety of materials and finishes. This page should help identify the various patterns of engine-turning most commonly seen. The illustrations below do not include all the patterns used, nor is the smooth or plain finish illustrated. Note that the same pattern names were used for the chasing of hard rubber pens and pencils.

The images below are ordered roughly in order of introduction. In general, new patterns seem to have been introduced on pencils earlier than on pens. Two very popular patterns, Dart and Ripple, were both listed as new in Wahl's September 1921 catalog. Various hand-engraved patterns were also offered from the very beginning, usually combining floral and foliate motifs.
